The historic Stellenbosch-based estate is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, with wine first made there over 300 years ago. Their winemaking philosophy remains simple: respect what the vineyard gives you and get the most out of each grape with minimal interference. This passionate commitment to making wines of the utmost quality has resulted in their winemakers winning multiple awards, both in South Africa and internationally. In 2018, the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) named Spier the South African Wine Producer of the Year, with it winning both the competition’s Chenin Blanc Trophy and the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy (in both cases, for wines from its heritage-inspired range of single varietals, 21 Gables).
Spier’s Growing for Good is a wide range of initiatives that empower communities to unleash positive social and environmental change. Spier is committed to ethical sourcing and complies with leading local and international ethical certifications (including WIETA and amfori BSCI). In 2019 its organically certified winery also became the first in the world to receive Control Union Vegan Standard certification by the accredited certifying body Control Union 2019). 100% of black- and grey-water and more than 98% of the farm’s solid waste is recycled.
